The Typical True Yoga Wardrobe!

Yoga wear falls into the "athleisure" category, and you will see many women wearing leggings and sports underwear outside of workout time. Yoga clothing is a fashion statement, not just a function. While this is all fun, if you plan to wear your clothes to a real yoga class, remember to test the clothing for flexibility and comfort.

AOMI shows you to take a look at what a typical yoga closet consists of.

Yoga Leggings

Yoga clothing brands offer many styles of yoga leggings in a variety of lengths and styles. As with all yoga clothing, look for yoga pants or leggings that offer breathability, flexibility and comfort. Nylon - polyester - spandex blend pants are a good choice because they move with your poses and also wick away moisture and sweat. If you are concerned about coverage when bending and stretching, then high-waisted leggings or pants may be a good choice.

Yoga Shorts

Some people find that shorts/skirts are the most comfortable option when a lot of heat and sweat is involved. In general, avoid yoga pants that are too thin, sheer, saggy (common in low-waisted, too-tight pants) or made of cotton. If you build up some heat during your practice, keep in mind that longer leg coverage may be a benefit in arm balancing poses, as the fabric will help keep your legs from slipping off your sweaty arms.

Yoga Tops

Regardless of style, most yoga practitioners prefer to wear a fitted t-shirt or tank top that is tight around the hips and waist. This narrow fit prevents the shirt from falling off the head when bending forward in a pose. Shirts made with breathable, moisture-wicking materials and soft seams are also a good idea for sweaty classes; avoid tags and tops that itch under the armpits. Many yoga undershirts also have built-in sports bras.

Yoga Jacket

If you plan to run errands after class, you may want a warm, comfortable yoga cover-up like a jacket, quarter-zip or sweatshirt. This is especially useful in the winter after leaving a sweaty class: the extra layer will prevent you from getting chilled right after you leave a warm room that might be chilly.

Sports Bras

The sports bra you choose will depend on your bra size and coverage needs. Generally speaking, high-intensity classes like power tandem require more support. Many female yogis wear a sports bra alone during sweaty classes without a tank top or t-shirt. Some yoga shirts and tank tops already have bras built in.

Yoga Socks

Some people prefer to wear socks while practicing yoga so that their feet don't slip on the mat. If you don't want to wear socks in class, consider purchasing a non-slip yoga mat or using a yoga towel on your existing mat.
